Indoor Tanning
The popular websites comment on the rising trend of indoor tanning, quoting 68% increase in sales for the tanning industry in America alone. Indoor tanning has been proven to be less harmful than the sun’s rays, but long periods of exposure age and dry the skin much in the manner of sun tanning, and the long and frequent sessions provides a sizeable dent in consumer pockets.
Indoor tanning lotions are the industry’s solution to this dermatological dilemma. Tanning bed lotions are engineered to maximize the results of tanning sessions. These lotions contain the essential nutrients necessary for creating a deep natural-looking tan. While seemingly expensive, tanning lotions actually save time and money by providing a better tan in fewer sessions and come packed with moisturizing ingredients. Moist skin tans faster and more efficiently than dry skin resulting in a better tan in fewer weeks. Active ingredients supplement the skin's cells with the same proteins that enhance the tanning process naturally.
Indoor tanning lotions also help counteract the drying effects of heat and light associated with tanning and keep skin supple, young and healthy. The latest dermatological technology in indoor tanning lotions includes oxidants that prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

Cancer and Tanning
The debate on tanning and the risks of cancer has been going on for years. Several studies have shown that using a tanning bed can increase the risk of getting cancer. On the other hand it has been shown that tanning has can help reduce the risks of cancer by its controlled system that reduces the risk of sunburn.
When tanning under lights, the UV rays creates stimulates the skin cells. In turn the activated and stimulated skin cells produce more melanin, which is the pigment that gives skin its natural color. Tanning beds activate this principle under controlled conditions and the fashion industry has promoted this method, making it the highly popular choice among women.
Results from studies have shown that among women who regularly resorted to tanning, the risk of developing cancer has been increased to 55%. A study carried out at Dartmouth concluded that women using tanning beds regularly were two and half times more likely to develop cancer.

Common Myths
There are a number of myths in support of the case for tanning and these myths have done much groundwork leading to the continuation of tanning under artificial conditions.
One of the common myths prevalent is the belief that tanning is healthy because it protects the body from sunburn. This is a totally baseless observation by the pro tanning lobby and relies on the idea that the tan is the body’s natural way of preventing UV rays from penetrating into the skin thereby reducing the risk of getting skin cancer. This is not the actual fact as the tan over a white skin acts as much of a sunscreen as an SPF4 strength sunscreen. Even to protect skin under normal conditions in the sun, one is recommended the use of an SPF 15 sunscreen strength. Thus this weak protection of tanning, equivalent only to SPF 4 strength, is too weak to help.
In addition, it is necessary to know that sunburn is a long term effect and that it does not immediately surface on the skin. So the belief that if the skin feels cool immediately after a dip in the sea, it will not sunburn is again a false belief. This is a false belief considering the fact that sunburn is a continuing process and a cumulative process that ultimately surfaces as the effect of sunburn. The idea, therefore, that staying out in the sun for a longer time when under water is not as harmful as being on the beach for the same amount of time, is totally mythical. Sun bathing, for longer hours even with breaks in between, will not stop the sunburn from taking place as water is not an agent that can prevent the harmful effects of sunburn.

SAFE TANNING
Airbrush tanning is an innovative way of creating a whole body tan that has gained great popularity and gives an all over tan without the sun. This increasing popular procedure using an airbrush has made airbrush tanning a natural way to maintain a tan all year round.
This unique tanning system involves a process that gives you an even tan. This new method can be applied in a short period of time compared to using one’s hands to do the same procedure. Airbrush tanning is a quick and easy application procedure. Usually taking only 10 minutes, airbrush tanning lasts for nearly 5 to 10 days.
All one needs to successfully complete this process is an airbrush and a compressor. Airbrush tanning is a new, harmless way to look tan without the chance of skin cancer. Tanning beds give you this risk as well. Many salons offer airbrush tanning services but you can also do it yourself with an airbrush tanning kit.

Tanning Beds
Tanning beds are a common method to tan without spending hours in the sun. The ultra violet rays used in tanning beds are similar to the UV rays given out by the sun. So they also have similar risks. But by knowing how to use tanning beds you can avoid being harmed. As long as tanning beds are used properly they can provide an excellent way to get that perfect tan which you have wanted for a long time.
Tanning beds have lights that generate ultraviolet radiation both UVB and UVA rays. If you are planning to use a conventional bed, use it for about twenty to thirty minutes, three to five times a week, this will allow you to build up a base tan in about four weeks. High-pressure tanning beds make use of only UVA rays so a faster and deeper tan is obtained.
There are risks with using a tanning bed to get a tan. If you overexpose you skin to the lights you can get skin problems as tanning beds also produces UV rays and this can cause the increase of melanin which will make your complexion darker.

How To Treat A Sun Burn Or Stroke After Tanning?
Many people use aloe gel on their sun burns. The natural essence of the aloe vera plant in the gel helps soothe the skin and the pain. Doctors also recommend using plain yoghurt to cool the place and protect it.
In case of a sunstroke, you must drink as much water as possible and rest a lot. Make sure to eat lightly but regularly and if things remain as they are, check yourself into the emergency room. It is NOT a matter to take lightly!

Tanning - The Extra Risks
Two risks come to mind when tanning: the short term - sunstroke and burns, and the long term - skin cancer. Sunstroke can be avoided by drinking a lot and trying to sit for some periods of time in the shade. Burns can be avoided by tanning carefully and smartly, for short periods of time and with a sun screen lotion.
Skin cancer seems to be reinforced by tanning at a young age and you need to watch out if you have freckles on your body. Make sure their color and size don't change and if they do, see your doctor about it. Make sure to tan smartly and cautiously and you should remain healthy. Keep in mind that the times the sun's radiation is at it's strongest are between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon.

Tanning Without The Sun
Here are some tips for a safe, sunless and costless tanning right in your home. Remember before applying those sunless tanning lotions to clean your body and exfoliate your skin by using a loofah or soft cloth to wash off dust and dead skin cells. This will ensure an even tan.
Use moderate amount on knees, elbows and other parts with thick, dry skin, because they usually appear darker. Use a sponge paintbrush, about two to three inches in size, for applying the atnning lotion onto your back. When applying on your face, avoid spreading in and around the eyes. After application, wash your hands immediately and thoroughly with soap and water. Use a make-up wedge when applying to the backs of your hands in smooth even strokes as well as on your feet and between the toes. Apply the tanning lotion using both horizontal and vertical strokes or a circular motion.
When using a spray tanning lotion, avoid saturating it. Instead, spray and blend quickly and thoroughly over one body part then do the same to the rest of the body. After making sure the tanning lotion is applied evenly, wait for about one hour before applying any moisturizer or foundation or going swimming/bathing. Also, avoid contact with carpets, fabrics, clothing, and furniture. If necessary, and for a deeper tan, repeat the process.
A very important reminder for you: Stay away from the sun from about 10:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. That is when the sun is most harmful. Remember that wanting a beautiful skin is not merely an act of vanity. Taking care of your skin is also taking care of your health. Protecting it from the sun is the most important gift you could give your skin. Get a beautiful and safe tan right in your own home without spending too much.

Tanning - The Risks And The Appeal
It seems quite fashionable to come back from a vacation with bronzed skin or spend the summer tanning on the beach. The appeal is obvious: many people seem to think that a tan looks great. A well-tanned body seems to attract more attention and young people seem to invest a lot of energy into getting a tan.
But the risks are there, certainly. It is quite common to find people who have been tanning for many years battling melanoma, or skin cancer, in their later years. A very strict regime of tanning is the best way to go about it, but even that doesn't insure good health. Some people prefer tanning salons, where tanning beds are available, but some researches show that these might be dangerous for the skin as well. Cream-based tanning gives the skin a fake look, that can be quite disappointing.
If you choose to get a tan before next summer, be sure to lie in the sun for short periods of time to avoid sun burns or sun stroke. Use suntan lotion with a good protection level and don't forget to keep your self hydrated.
